Parliament clears Workmen Compensation Bill
The Parliament has passed the Workmen’s Compensation (Amendment) Bill, 2009, that aims to enhance the compensation package for employees, with its approval by the Rajya Sabha. Under the amended provisions, employees, whether contract or casual, and their dependents would get relief in case of accidents causing either death or disablement during the course of their employment.

Expats can take home their entire salary now
Expats, who are working in India, will now be able to take home 100% of their salary following a change in rules to this effect by the RBI. This would benefit sectors such as aviation, telecom, infrastructure that employs a large number of expats, making it easier for them to attract foreign talent where needed.

Total disability’ if worker cannot carry out his job – Supreme Court judgment

Under the Workmen’s Compensation Act, if an employee is permanently disabled due to an injury at workplace, it would be called ‘total disability’ and the insurance company should compensate according to that criterion.

The Supreme Court has held that consumer courts cannot entertain disputes relating to non-payment of telephone bill under the Consumer Protection (CP) Act.
